WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital and Ephrata Public Library team up for Healthy Day in the Park

Wednesday, April 12, 2017

WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital and the Ephrata Public Library are partnering to offer Healthy Day in the Park, a free fitness and family fun event to be held in June.

The event will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, June 3, in Grater Memorial Park in Ephrata.

Healthy Day in the Park is a redesign of a longtime hospital event called Day in the Park, which was held for 60 years. Healthy Day in the Park unites WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital’s long tradition of fostering healthy communities with the Ephrata Public Library’s mission of promoting opportunities for those seeking to improve, change, enrich and enjoy their lives.

The event will kick off the 2017 GO (Get Outdoors) Ephrata! program, which promotes reading and physical activity for kids during the summer. Other activities at the Healthy Day in the Park will include a Family Fun Walk around the Ephrata Park, a health fair featuring hospital departments and other community partners, an obstacle course, character story time and more.

“At WellSpan, we believe good health is not just the absence of illness and disease. It also is a state of physical, mental and social well-being,” said Carrie Willetts, senior vice president for WellSpan Health and president of WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital. “That’s our goal for our communities, and it’s one that we can’t achieve alone. We’re excited to partner with the Ephrata Public Library on Healthy Day in the Park.”

Each year, the GO Ephrata! program encourages children and parents to get outdoors and be physically active by engaging in letterboxing, a hobby in which participants follow written clues to locate hidden items. GO Ephrata! has been a joint effort between the Ephrata Public Library and WellSpan Health since 2015.

“The Ephrata Public Library is thrilled to partner with WellSpan in the Healthy Day in the Park event. Together, we can engage the community in fun activities, promote a healthy lifestyle and encourage kids of all ages to sign up for GO Ephrata! and the 2017 Summer Reading program,” said Joy Ashley, director of development for Ephrata Public Library. “The library and WellSpan Health share a passion for the Ephrata community. We want the community to grow, thrive and be healthy.”
