Clinicians and staff have cared for more than 17,000 patients at the York County hospital since it opened in 2012
WellSpan Surgery and Rehabilitation Hospital is proud to mark five years of serving and benefiting the community – providing the care and tools necessary for area residents, who sustain traumatic injuries and develop complex, debilitating conditions, to return to their normal lives.
Five years ago, WellSpan Health opened the first – and still only – nonprofit inpatient rehabilitation and surgical facility in York County. Since that time, the hospital has served as a valuable community resource that has profoundly impacted more than 17,000 lives through inpatient rehabilitation programs and advanced surgical capabilities.
WellSpan Surgery and Rehabilitation Hospital officially opened its doors on April 23, 2012. As the hospital celebrates its fifth anniversary, clinicians and staff are also celebrating their patients, who chose the facility for their care.
“From the start, our patients and our charitable mission were the guiding forces behind this hospital,” said Barbara Yarrish, senior vice president of post-acute services for WellSpan Health, and president of WellSpan Surgery and Rehabilitation Hospital. “We are proud to care for every single patient who comes through our doors – with compassion, dedication and exceptional clinical quality.”
WellSpan broke ground on the 73-bed, 156,000-square-foot hospital on its Apple Hill Health Campus in York in April 2010. Its design was centered on patient safety, accessibility and a healing environment. It was built to meet the increasing needs of an aging population and support patients whose care may have also included other WellSpan facilities, including WellSpan York Hospital and its Level 1 Trauma Center. Its addition also allowed WellSpan York Hospital to increase its surgical capacity and to expand surgical service offerings.
Highlighting its commitment to nonprofit inpatient rehabilitation care, WellSpan Surgery and Rehabilitation Hospital is the first hospital in southcentral Pennsylvania to be awarded the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities International (CARF) designation for its Brain Injury Specialty Program. This designation uniquely positions the hospital to meet the community’s need to provide specialized care to brain injury patients. It represents the highest level that can be awarded by CARF to an organization and is a recognized mark of excellence for a program’s quality of care.
Yarrish noted that the brain injury program allows trauma patients from the area – many of whom receive critical emergency care at WellSpan York Hospital’s Level 1 Trauma Center – to access essential inpatient rehabilitation services without leaving their community.
One such patient is Joseph Fort, 21, of York Township. Fort suffered a traumatic brain injury following a motorcycle accident in September 2016.
“It was just kind of like a big family,” Fort said of his care team at WellSpan Surgery and Rehabilitation Hospital. “Being in the situation that I was where I couldn’t do much, it was difficult. But the nurses, the doctors and the therapy team here, everyone’s so encouraging that I kind of just fit right in. Before I knew it, I was like ‘man I am leaving next week, I hope I can come back.’”
Today, Fort continues to make progress and now regularly participates in outpatient physical therapy at the hospital, as well as a support group organized by hospital staff.
In addition to the brain injury program, WellSpan Surgery and Rehabilitation Hospital also offers advanced neurosurgical and spine injury procedures, as well as both inpatient and specialized outpatient rehabilitation services.
Since its opening, the hospital has routinely been recognized nationally for its patient-centered care and exceptional clinical quality.
Among its many accolades are: Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) 5 Star Rating; HIMSS Analytics Stage 7 Award; Press Ganey 2016 Guardian of Excellence Award® winner for patient experience; Becker’s Hospital Review: 45 hospitals with top nurse-patient communication, 51 hospitals with the fastest patient aid and top 5 Pennsylvania hospitals patients would recommend.
“WellSpan Surgery and Rehabilitation Hospital is truly a valuable community resource,” Yarrish said. “Not only has it allowed us to impact thousands of lives in our community, but it has also allowed us to expand our care offerings at WellSpan York Hospital – meaning we can now provide more care to more people, every day. That’s certainly worth celebrating.”
