WellSpan York Hospital marks National Trauma Awareness Month with classes to reduce No. 1 cause of trauma admissions

Wednesday, May 24, 2017

With May serving as National Trauma Awareness Month, WellSpan York Hospital is shedding light on the No. 1 reason for trauma admissions at the hospital’s Level 1 Regional Trauma Center – falls.

In an effort to decrease the number of falls across York County, WellSpan York Hospital Trauma Services and the Falls Free Coalition of York County offer area residents classes throughout the year, called “A Matter of Balance.” The national program is offered free of charge to residents in York County who are 65 years and older. Upcoming sessions are scheduled for locations in Manchester Township and Hanover.

“Our trauma center is here to serve the community when people need us most,” said Sandra Garrett, trauma program manager, WellSpan York Hospital. “We hope offering this successful program to older adults will not only keep them safer, but will also empower individuals to be as active as possible.”

Consisting of eight, two-hour sessions, the classes teach participants how to change their environment to reduce fall risks, exercise to increase strength and balance, and learn how to manage their fear of falling.

Registration is currently open for sessions starting in July. Interested participants may call 717-851-3082 for more information.

WellSpan York Hospital's Level 1 Regional Resource Trauma Center has been accredited by the Pennsylvania Trauma Systems Foundation and is the only accredited Level 1 trauma center in Adams, Franklin, York, Lancaster and Lebanon counties. The hospital receives more than 2,200 trauma patients each year.
