WellSpan’s Sechler Family Cancer Center in Lebanon offers clinical trials

Wednesday, May 03, 2017

WellSpan’s Sechler Family Cancer Center, in Lebanon, has begun offering its patients the opportunity to participate in clinical trials, allowing them to receive leading-edge therapies as well as take part in medical studies that advance cancer care.

Sechler’s patients may enroll in studies that are examining treatments for breast, ovarian and lung cancers, multiple myeloma and other cancers. Current studies include one that is doing molecular testing for targeted therapies.

“We are excited to offer our patients the ability to participate in studies that can improve cancer care,” said Kelly Smith, Sechler Family Cancer Center director.

All patients at the center are evaluated for possible participation in trials. If eligible, patients make the decision to actually participate in the trial.

Sechler Family Cancer Center participates in clinical trials via WellSpan Oncology Services. The trials target patients’ unique treatment needs and their type of cancer. Patients may have access to additional treatment options that are being studied to determine if they prolong survival or improve the quality of life.

Patients who participate in clinical trials have the opportunity to either receive a treatment not approved for their type of cancer, including investigational therapies, or to compare investigational therapies to the current standard treatment for their type of cancer.

“We are excited to be expanding our oncology clinical trials program to patients at the Sechler Family Cancer Center,” said Douglas Arbittier, M.D., vice president of WellSpan’s Oncology Service Line. “This will allow us to offer innovative therapies to our patents, while advancing research in cancer treatment that could one day benefit patients around the world.”

Sechler Family Cancer Center is the fifth WellSpan cancer center to become a site for clinical cancer trials, joining the Ephrata Cancer Center, York Cancer Center, Adams Cancer Center and Cherry Tree Cancer Center.
