What to Expect

WellSpan Surgery & Rehabilitation Hospital combines modern innovations with a highly-trained, compassionate staff to create your individualized path to healing and recovery. We provide expert care for patients recovering from injuries or disorders such as stroke, traumatic brain injury, amputation, hip fracture, spinal cord injury, general debility, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis or other neurologic conditions.

As you embark on the next phase of your journey, it may be helpful to know what to expect when you arrive at the WellSpan Surgery & Rehabilitation Hospital. While your plan will be tailored to your specific needs, a typical day for a rehabilitation patient may look something like this:

6:30 a.m. Rise and shine
7 a.m. Bath or shower, dress in your own clothes, grooming and other activities of daily living with support of nursing staff or occupational therapist in your room
8 a.m. Practice locomotion skills to the patient dining room for breakfast
8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Physical therapy in a therapy gym or the garden, with a multi-surfaced walking path, putting green, basketball hoop and other functional recreation activities; focus on strengthening
9:30 to 11 a.m. Rest
11 to 11:30 a.m. Speech therapy with a focus on speaking, listening, swallowing and cognition
11:30 a.m. to Noon Occupational therapy in an area with a functional kitchen to prepare lunch; focus on mobility, balance and cognition
Noon Lunch in therapy kitchen
1 to 2 p.m. Rest
2 to 2:30 p.m. Physical therapy using specialized therapy equipment such as Lokomat, which improves mobility in individuals recovering from a stroke, spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, multiple sclerosis or other neurological condition by assisting with walking movements
2:30 to 3 p.m. Seated fine motor activity
Evening Dinner in the Garden View Dining Room, where you can choose from a restaurant-style menu
Evening Walk with assistance of nursing staff, based on therapy recommendations
Evening Participate in an activity led by therapeutic recreation therapist designed to reinforce skills learned in therapy
