‘Summer Read’ kickoff to feature award-winning journalist and author of ‘Dreamland: The True Tale of America's Opiate Epidemic’

The free event will be held April 30 and will include a book signing, keynote presentation and community panel discussion

WellSpan Health and WITF have teamed up to offer a free event, titled “The Opioid Crisis Here at Home: The Other Side of Pain,” Monday, April 30 at the Pullo Family Performing Arts Center (The Pullo Center) on the campus of Penn State York, 1031 Edgecomb Ave.

The event aims to educate the community about the opioid epidemic and will kick off “A Summer Read” by featuring Sam Quinones, an award-winning journalist and author of “Dreamland: The True Tale of America's Opiate Epidemic.” The event begins with a book signing by Quinones at 4:30 p.m., followed by a keynote presentation from the “Dreamland” author at 5:30 p.m.

A panel discussion focusing on the opioid crisis in York County will follow the Quinones presentation. The discussion will highlight the perspectives of local elected officials, as well as representatives from local health care and addiction recovery organizations.

To register for the event, call 717-363-8222 or visit www.WellSpan.org/events and search “opioid.”

“A Summer Read” is a unique annual program presented by WITF’s Transforming Health, Aligning Forces for Quality - South Central PA and the central Pennsylvania library systems to encourage residents to visit local libraries to borrow the summer read and hold discussions with their book clubs, friends, family and colleagues.

Through selection of this year’s book “Dreamland,” the goal this year is to engage readers in a conversation about the opioid epidemic and how individuals are confronting the crisis in their communities.

The event is funded by proceeds from the Country Club of York’s Charity Classic Tennis Tournament. Last year, organizers made a $30,000 donation to the WellSpan York Health Foundationto aid in increasing public awareness and access to non-opioid pain management treatment through WellSpan’s alternative pain management program.
