Top Notch Care for Our Smallest PatientssubHeadH2 accessibility

There are times when delivering a baby isn’t as simple as you’d have hoped. When this happens, it’s important to know that there is a Level III and Level II neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) close to home.

Our Level III NICU at WellSpan York Hospital provides the most comprehensive medical services for premature and critically ill newborns in the south-central Pennsylvania area. When compared with other NICUs across the United States, we consistently rank higher than average in terms of quality and patient outcomes.

Equipped with the latest technology, our NICU Level II at WellSpan Chambersburg Hospital allows babies born as early as 32 weeks gestation or babies with unexpected medical complications to be treated close to home.

Staffed with 24/7 Neonatologist, our NICU Level IIIA at WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital cares for babies born as early as 28 weeks gestation or babies with unexpected medical complications to be treated close to home.

Whether you deliver at one of our hospitals or a hospital outside of our network, rest assured that our NICU is prepared to provide world-class care for your newborn. Our NICU motto is, “Our family caring for your family,” which demonstrates our focus on caring for the entire family, and not only for the medical condition of the baby.

The neonatology team collaborates closely with a large team of experts to deliver the very best care for your newborn’s medical condition. These include:

  • Pharmacists
  • Physical therapists
  • Play therapists
  • Respiratory therapists
  • Speech and dysphagia therapists
  • Social workers
  • Pediatric surgeons

The neonatology team at WellSpan is committed to continual improvement and being on the leading edge of health care for infants – and we have won numerous awards and recognitions for these efforts. The neonatology team at WellSpan is also very active with the March for Babies walk through the March of Dimes. Each year, we contribute $20,000 to $30,000 to this worthy cause.

By choosing WellSpan, you are choosing a system that covers all spectrums of life. Our close coordination with multiple departments ensures that your child is covered for any type of treatment that he or she may need.

How We Can Help

Care for Extremely Premature Babies

Whether your baby is with us for a short or long stay, we will provide the same level of expertise for your baby and prepare you for a successful transition home. Our 9-bed Chambersburg NICU and 44-bed York NICU are equipped with AngelEye cameras so that you and your family can virtually monitor your baby from anywhere with an internet connection.

24/7 Access

We understand that being close to your baby is important. That is why our unit is open to parents 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Continuity and Seamless Transitions of Care

Gain peace of mind knowing that the same Maternal-Fetal Medicine team will care for your baby locally and in York. If your baby needs to be transferred between WellSpan facilities, our high quality of care remains consistent.

Inter-Hospital Transport

If your baby needs to transfer to a different facility, we provide specialized, medically-equipped transportation services.

Care Collaboration

If complications arise as your child develops, we collaborate closely with many WellSpan subspecialty services – such as neurology, infectious disease, and surgery – to address your baby’s needs.

Access to World-Class Surgeons

We are affiliated with the finest pediatric surgical service on the East Coast: Johns Hopkins. Under their guidance, most surgical services are performed in York, which avoids additional transfers for your child.

Treatment for PDA

We partner with pediatric cardiologists and cardiothoracic surgeons from Hershey Medical Center to perform surgical treatment for patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) in York.

Mechanical Ventilation

We offer life-sustaining breathing support to premature babies with underdeveloped lungs until they are able to fully function on their own.

NICU Lactation Services

We have an in-house team of nurses who are also internationally board-certified lactation consultants (IBCLCs) and are expertly trained to address the unique needs of NICU babies and moms. WellSpan participates in the Keystone 10 initiative, which demonstrates our commitment to the protection, promotion, and support of breastfeeding for babies and mothers.

Brain Cooling Program

In 2010, WellSpan pioneered the first brain-cooling program in the region – known as therapeutic hypothermia (TH) – to reduce the risk of brain injury from birth asphyxia.

Neonatal Abstinence Care

When mothers stay with baby, this can help reduce the need for medication and can decrease the baby’s length of stay in the hospital. WellSpan has developed a cutting edge scoring system for management that has reduced length of stay and need for narcotic therapy for the babies.

Care for Your Entire Family

We are committed to building lifelong relationships with our NICU babies and their families. One of the ways that we do this is through our annual reunion. Each year, we welcome back hundreds of families for whom we have provided care in our facility.

Champions for Safe Infant Sleep

We were the first hospital in Pennsylvania to become a Cribs for Kids’ Gold Level Safe Sleep Champion. One of the neonatologists at WellSpan is a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics’ (AAP) task force on sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), and is actively involved in developing new guidelines for safe infant sleep.

NICU Parent Support Group

The NICU Parent Support Group of York, PA, meets at WellSpan York Hospital, and provides an opportunity for parents of NICU babies to share their stories.
