Our approach to brain injury care

When a complex brain injury occurs, whether from a car accident, workplace accident or fall, you need advanced care. A brain injury can be scary, and the uncertainty of the recovery process may feel overwhelming.

Because no two brain injuries are alike, it's hard to know what lasting effects the injury may have. It’s important to find care providers who know the appropriate management for brain injuries.

Our team of experts, including neurologists and physiatrists, work together with optometrists, neuro-rehabilitation therapists, back-to-work programs and other community services to provide comprehensive care for brain injuries.

Tests and treatments for brain injury

Depending on the severity of the injury, you may need one or more imaging tests, including:

  • computed tomography (CT) scan: Health care providers in the emergency department usually order this imaging if they suspect a traumatic brain injury. This test can show bone fractures, bleeding in the brain, blood clots and brain swelling.
  • magnetic resonance imaging (MRI): Our team of experts may later order an MRI if they need more information about the brain injury.

Our Brain Injury Program providers use advanced therapies to treat people who have experienced a brain injury:

  • neurorehabilitative treatments with physical and occupational therapists specially trained in concussion and brain injury management
  • specialized vision testing and consultation with a behavioral optometrist to address any visual problems
  • specialized cognitive behavioral therapy through speech language services
  • balance and mobility training with specialized equipment
  • specialized equipment to enhance arm and hand use, coordination and integration of cognitive (thinking) and motor functions
