Expert support throughout your journey

Our approach to multiple sclerosis care

Multiple sclerosis (MS) isn’t just a disease. It’s an unpredictable journey.

We understand that MS doesn’t just affect you physically — it changes how you live. But our fellowship-trained neurologists and MS specialists are here to support you every step of the way.

Signs and symptoms of multiple sclerosis

MS is a chronic neurological disease that involves the central nervous system — specifically the brain, spinal cord and optic nerves. MS can cause problems with muscle control and strength, vision, balance, sensation and mental function.

People with MS typically experience one of four disease courses, each of which might be mild, moderate or severe. The disease courses include:

  • Clinically isolated syndromeor the first clinical onset of potential MS
  • Relapsing-remitting MS - symptoms worsen followed by partial or complete recovery
  • Primary progressive MS - symptoms gradually worsen
  • Secondary progressive MS - symptoms progress without relapse

The symptoms of MS can vary depending on the type of the disease and the severity of the condition.

When to seek care for multiple sclerosis

If you’re experiencing any of the following symptoms, it's important to reach out for further evaluation and diagnosis.

  • fatigue
  • dizziness or light-headedness
  • shortness of breath during normal activities
  • fluttering, racing or pounding in your chest (palpitations)

Diagnosing multiple sclerosis

Diagnosing MS can be challenging, especially early on when your symptoms may be minor or sporadic. It can also be difficult because other diseases can have similar warning signs, and there’s no definitive single laboratory test to confirm MS.

The diagnosis is made based on your neurological examination and history of neurological symptoms. We’ll perform a complete clinical assessment and use a variety of neurodiagnostic tests to properly diagnose MS.

Step 1: Neurological examination

Our team will perform a complete clinical assessment, including a detailed review of your symptoms and medical history.

Step 2: Neurodiagnostic tests

We may recommend one or more of the following tests to confirm the diagnosis:

  • magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of your brain and/or spinal cord
  • evaluation of your cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) with a lumbar puncture or spinal tap
  • evoked potential studies

Step 3: Diagnosis

Based on the results of your examination and tests, our team will work with you to develop a personalized treatment plan.
