Give your heart some world-class love at WellSpan, home to internationally renowned heart experts, leading-edge technology, a vast research program, and personalized care.
Here are just four ways we are inspiring heart health and leading cardiac care right in your own backyard.
World-class skills
When you need heart care, know that you are in good hands with our heart and vascular team. We are the experts that others turn to for guidance. Over the past year, we livestreamed three different cardiac procedures from WellSpan York Hospital's cardiac catheterization lab across the nation for the purposes of teaching other cardiologists our techniques. We also hosted a team of physicians from India who traveled all way to South Central Pennsylvania. Our experts taught them best practices on the transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) procedure.
Our quality care and outcomes have earned national accolades. Just last year, WellSpan was named to Becker's list of 100 hospitals and health systems with great heart programs. Also, hospitals in each of our regions earned "high performing" recognition for the treatment of heart attacks from U.S. News & World Report in its Best Hospitals rankings.
Leading-edge research
For more than two decades, the Heart and Vascular Research Department has participated in clinical trials offered in the U.S. and around the world. Right now, our team is working on eight different clinical trials to identify the newest and most effective treatment methods for cardiovascular disease.
Another initiative, The Gene Health Project, is a community research project at WellSpan, that looks at genetic factors that may influence a person's health including hereditary forms of cancer and heart disease. WellSpan patients and community members 18 years old and older can share DNA samples to support research and help to identify health risks like heart disease, as well as certain cancers.
Compassionate care designed for you
Our patients are at the heart of what we do, and we offer compassionate care that meets their individual needs.
Tonya, a mom of three who is in her 40s, had serious coronary artery disease. She had a triple bypass via an "off-pump procedure" that is the gold standard for heart surgery. "It was in my backyard," she says.
Joe, a retired state police trooper and motorcycle rider, had surgery on a blockage in a neck artery to reduce his risk from stroke. He loved his surgeon's confidence and the way he made him feel – the surgeon even called him the night before the procedure to tell him to get a good night's sleep. "Because of the procedure, I can do the things I did before," he says.
Carol said the personalized care she received from the WellSpan Cholesterol Care and Advanced Lipid Clinic "completely changed my life. I feel like shouting it from the rooftops." The program provides targeted care, including dietary help and medications, to help reduce high levels of cholesterol.
