At WellSpan, adults and teens experience the gift of giving every day as volunteers. Many of them find the experience so rewarding that they make a long-term commitment to volunteering. Several have logged more than 1,000 hours doing what they love in the community.

Summer volunteer program
The summer volunteer program has a variety of opportunities, so applicants, ages 16 and older, must be flexible and open to a variety of volunteer positions within healthcare.
Summer volunteers must commit to 75 hours during the summer, which is approximately 12-16 hours per week (two weeks off during the summer to enjoy vacations and/or camps).

Types of volunteer positions
Volunteer positions can include:
- patient contact: providing patient concierge services, patient aid and pampering
- courier/messenger: delivering flowers, e-greetings, mail, medical records or patient supplies
- administrative support: filing, mailing, assembling packets, data entry and copying
- public contact: acting as a greeter, information desk attendant or receptionist
- community outreach: representing WellSpan at health fairs and conducting educational outreach
- patient/family advisor: partnering with staff and physicians to improve care and services at WellSpan
- pet therapy volunteer (dogs): working with a WellSpan-approved pet therapy organization
We follow our regulatory agency requirements for volunteer onboarding. These requirements include:
- criminal background checks and child abuse clearance verifications (state and federal)
- at least 16 years of age
- 100 hours of service within the first 12 months of starting
- dependable, responsible, friendly demeanor
- immunization/vaccine requirements (including annual flu vaccination)
- personal reference checks
- annual requirements (including education and infection control)
