WellSpan has earned a Top Hospital designation by Leapfrog for three years in a row

WellSpan Gettysburg Hospital has been named a Top General Hospital by The Leapfrog Group, a national watchdog organization of employers and other purchasers, widely acknowledged as the toughest standard-setters for health care safety and quality. This is the third year in a row that WellSpan has earned a Top Hospital designation.

"To be named a Top Hospital by Leapfrog three years in a row shows just how dedicated this team is to keeping our patients safe," said Michael Cogliano, president, WellSpan Gettysburg Hospital and vice president, WellSpan Health. "The COVID-19 pandemic has really added another layer to the importance of safety in our hospital, and this recognition is well deserved for our staff. Each member of the WellSpan team is dedicated to providing the safest and best care to our patients."

The Leapfrog Top Hospital award is widely acknowledged as one of the most competitive awards American hospitals can receive. Over 2,200 hospitals were considered for the award, with 115 nationwide being selected as Top Hospitals in the categories of children's hospitals, general hospitals, rural hospitals, and teaching hospitals.

Hospitals surveyed by Leapfrog annually are considered Top Hospitals if they are deemed to have better systems in place to prevent medication errors and lower infection rates. Hospitals must also have received an A in the most recent Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grades in order to be eligible for the Top Hospital designation.

To qualify for the Top Hospitals distinction, hospitals must rank top among peers on the Leapfrog Hospital Survey, which assesses hospital performance on the highest standards for quality and patient safety.

In 2020 and 2021, WellSpan Waynesboro Hospital was named a Top Teaching Hospital by The Leapfrog Group, with WellSpan Chambersburg also receiving the distinction in 2020. In November, WellSpan Gettysburg Hospital, along with four other WellSpan hospitals, received A safety grades by The Leapfrog Group.
