Body Contouring

Get the shape you’ve always wanted.

What is body contouring?

Body contouring refers to surgical procedures that remove excess skin and fat, and tighten underlying muscles, resulting in a more toned and proportionate appearance.

Who is a candidate for body contouring?

Ideal candidates for body contouring are people who are in good overall health and have realistic expectations for the procedure. You may be a good candidate for body contouring if you:

  • are bothered by loose or sagging skin after significant weight loss or pregnancy
  • have localized fat deposits that are resistant to diet and exercise
  • are in good physical and mental health
  • are a non-smoker
  • have a positive outlook and are realistic about the risks and benefits of body contouring

Body contouring may not be right for you if you:

  • are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • have a history of certain medical conditions, such as heart disease, diabetes, or cancer
  • are taking certain medications that may interfere with the healing process
  • have a body mass index (BMI) of 35 or higher
  • have unrealistic expectations for the procedure

If you are considering body contouring, it is important to talk to your doctor to determine if you are a good candidate for the procedure.

What to expect

Before your body contouring treatment:

  • Get cleared for surgery by your bariatric surgeon or primary care doctor.
  • Get a lab test.
  • Take certain medications or adjust your current medications.
  • Stop smoking well in advance of surgery.
  • Avoid taking aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs, herbal supplements or other medications that may increase bleeding.
  • Arrange for someone to drive you to and from surgery and stay with you for at least the first night following surgery.

During your body contouring treatment:

  • The procedure is generally an outpatient surgery.
  • Dressings or bandages will be applied to your incisions following the procedure.
  • Small, thin tubes may be temporarily placed under the skin to drain any excess blood or fluid that may collect.

After your body contouring treatment:

  • You may be instructed to avoid bending, straining or lifting for several days to weeks.
  • You may also be instructed to avoid standing fully upright and stressing any internal sutures as they heal, and to sleep with pillows elevating your knees.
  • To minimize the risk of DVT (blood clots in the legs), you will need to be up and walking as soon as possible and drinking plenty of fluids.
  • Your surgeon will prescribe medications to apply or take orally to aid healing.
  • Your surgeon will let you know when to schedule a follow-up appointment.
