Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)

Redefining depression treatment

What is transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS)?

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive, drug-free treatment that uses magnetic fields to stimulate underactive areas of the brain associated with depression. It’s an excellent option for people who haven’t responded well to medications.

TMS therapy is FDA approved and administered by licensed and certified professionals in an outpatient setting. It’s been safely administered in millions of treatment sessions worldwide.

With TMS, long-term relief from depression is achievable. Many patients experience significant improvement or complete resolution of symptoms after four to six weeks of treatment.

Who is a candidate for TMS therapy?

You may be a candidate for TMS therapy if you:

  • have been diagnosed with depression
  • have tried at least one antidepressant medication without success
  • are 18 years of age or older
  • aren't pregnant or breastfeeding
  • don't have any metal implants in your head or neck
  • don't have a history of seizures
  • aren't taking any blood thinners

Talk with you doctor to decide if TMS therapy is right for you.

What to expect during transcranial magnetic stimulation?

Before treatment

  • You'll comfortably recline in the treatment chair.
  • A small, curved device containing a magnetic coil will be positioned lightly on your head.

During treatment

  • The coil will deliver targeted magnetic stimulation directly to the target areas of your brain.
  • You’ll hear a clicking sound and feel a tapping sensation on your head.
  • You’ll remain awake and alert during the treatment, with no sedation or anesthesia.

After treatment

  • You’ll be able to resume normal activities immediately.
  • There are no effects on alertness or memory, so you can drive yourself to and from treatment sessions.
  • You may experience mild to moderate pain or discomfort at or near the treatment site during the first week of treatment. It’s usually temporary.

Benefits of TMS therapy

If medication for depression hasn’t worked for you, TMS has proven to be a successful alternative. Here are some of its potential benefits:

  • Depression relief: Symptoms typically improve after four to six weeks of treatment.
  • Non-invasive and drug-free: No medication side effects mean no impact on alertness or memory.
  • Convenient and comfortable: Treatment sessions take as little as 18 to 20 minutes and are administered in the comfort of an outpatient clinic.
