Tummy Tuck

Get the flatter, firmer tummy you've always wanted

What is a tummy tuck?

Tummy tuck surgery, also called abdominoplasty, removes excess fat and skin from the stomach. It can also tighten weakened or separated muscles, creating a smoother and firmer profile.

Who is a candidate for a tummy tuck?

In general, you may be a good candidate for a tummy tuck if:

  • You're struggling with pesky skin or stretch marks around your stomach despite proper diet and exercise
  • You've been at a stable goal weight for at least six months
  • You have realistic expectations
  • You're a non-smoker

What to expect when getting a tummy tuck

Before the procedure:

  • You may need to get lab tests or a medical evaluation.
  • You may need to take certain medications or adjust your current medications.
  • You'll need to stop smoking
  • Avoid taking aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs and herbal supplements, as they can increase bleeding.

During the procedure:

  • The surgery will take approximately three hours.
  • You'll be given anesthesia to sleep during the surgery.
  • The surgeon will make an incision in your abdomen and remove excess skin and fat.
  • The surgeon may also tighten your abdominal muscles and/or perform some liposuction to better contour your abdomen.
  • The incision will be closed with sutures.

After the procedure:

  • You'll be taken to the recovery room where you'll be monitored for any complications.
  • You may experience pain, swelling and bruising around your abdomen.
  • You'll be given pain medication to help manage your pain.
  • You'll be able to go home the same or next day if no complications arise.
  • You'll need to wear a compression garment for several weeks to help support your abdomen as it heals.
  • Avoid strenuous activity for several weeks.
  • Your surgeon's team will schedule a follow-up to check your progress.
  • Your tummy tuck scar may take several months or up to a year to fade.

Benefits of a tummy tuck

Beyond a tummy tuck's improvements to your appearance, it can be a mental game-changer and reduce certain types of pain.

  • Flatter, firmer stomach: Within two weeks of your procedure, you'll notice a flatter, firmer contour that's more proportionate to your body type and weight.
  • Reduced back pain: By tightening the muscles of your abdomen, a tummy tuck can help to alleviate back pain caused by weak or separated muscles. This can greatly enhance your daily comfort and mobility.
  • Improved posture: A tummy tuck can help correct your posture. This can lead to better alignment of your spine, reducing strain on your back and neck muscles.
