The first family medicine residents began training at York Hospital in 1968, one year before family medicine was officially recognized as a specialty. Throughout the years, our program has thrived in a hospital with an unusually strong commitment to graduate medical education, and in a community where family physicians are the major providers of primary care.

Accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), our program is designed to educate residents in the full spectrum of family medicine in a respectful and supportive educational environment.

We also firmly believe that the creation of a diverse physician workforce is central to achieving equitable health outcomes for all and recognize our responsibility toward achieving that goal. We look forward to meeting you!

A unique aspect of our program

Narrative medicine is an experiential discipline that is predicated on the idea that illness and the care of patients occur in the context of three types of stories:

stories that patients and families tell us
stories that health caring professionals tell each other
stories that we tell ourselves

These stories are the way human beings make sense of their lives and convey meaning about them, especially our deeply emotional, lived experiences. These stories inform us about the suffering our patients and we physicians encounter.

Our Narrative Medicine Program turns to the arts and humanities to help us reflect, discuss and write about the experiences that enrich us and challenge us. In so doing we provide a space to examine, feel and process reactions to events that affect us as individuals and health care practitioners, such as racial disparities and injustice posed by that, and the far-reaching impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The sessions are a refreshment in our week. They keep us connected to our original motivations to care and advance our professional growth. The creativity and imagination deployed help participants cultivate habits that protect against burnout and waning enthusiasm.

An Important Educational Opportunity

Global Health Program

The Center for Global Health Education offers residents training in local and international rotations in low-resource settings. During these trips, residents gain invaluable experience while helping to improve the lives of children and adults living in poverty.

Accreditation as a Center of Excellence in Robotic Surgery from Surgical Review Corporation (SRC), a nonprofit patient safety organization. The hospital was the first healthcare facility in South Central Pennsylvania to attain this prestigious accreditation. Robotic surgery spans multiple specialties, including gynecology, gynecologic oncology, urology, urogynecology, bariatric, thoracic, colorectal, and general surgery.
WellSpan York Hospital has achieved the following from the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association’s Get with the Guidelines (GWTG) awards for 2023:
