What is ankle replacement?

Total ankle replacement is a surgery that replaces your damaged ankle joint with artificial parts. It’s typically recommended for individuals with severe arthritis, chronic pain or limited mobility in their ankle. The goal is to preserve natural movement, restore function and relieve pain so you can enjoy a greater quality of life.

Who is a candidate for ankle replacement?

Ankle replacement may be an option for you if:

  • you’ve already tried treatments like lifestyle changes, medications, injections, physical therapy, bracing and other surgeries
  • severe pain and stiffness in your ankle limits your daily activities
  • you’re a younger, active individual who wants to maintain joint motion and avoid the limitations of ankle fusion

If you’re considering total ankle replacement, start by talking to your doctor about the risks and benefits. The factors they’ll consider include:

  • your age, overall health and medical history
  • the severity of your ankle pain and stiffness
  • the extent of damage to your ankle joint
  • your activity level and lifestyle
  • your expectations for surgery

What to expect

Before the surgery

  • Your health and any conditions should be well-managed before surgery. You may need to lower your A1C if you have diabetes, quit smoking or improve your nutrition.
  • It can take three to six months to allow time for these lifestyle changes before surgery.
  • Arrange for a family member or friend to be your "coach" and stay with you for the first week after surgery.

During the surgery

  • Ankle replacement surgery normally takes two to three hours.

After the surgery

  • Some discomfort is normal during healing and may last from a few weeks to a few months. Peripheral nerve blocks are commonly used post-surgery to help you manage pain effectively without the risks associated with narcotic pain medication. Following your medication and rehabilitation plan will help ease pain, stiffness and swelling.
  • You'll see your surgeon one to two weeks after surgery. They'll assess your healing and decide when you can begin working with a physical therapist.
  • Sessions with a physical therapist will help you regain motion and build strength.
  • It may take several months to fully recover from your ankle replacement.

Benefits of ankle replacement

Some of the key benefits of ankle replacement surgery include:

  • reduced pain
  • improved mobility
  • improved quality of life
  • ability to do your favorite activities
