Panniculectomy (Abdominal Skin Surgery)

A smoother silhouette for a more confident you

What is a panniculectomy?

Panniculectomy is an outpatient surgery that removes excess skin from your lower stomach area. Unlike a tummy tuck, it doesn't involve tightening your muscles or repositioning your belly button.

Who is a candidate for a panniculectomy?

Panniculectomy can be a great option to reduce loose skin in your lower stomach area that is leading to uncontrolled rashes and skin infections. You may be a good candidate for a panniculectomy if you:

  • are physically healthy and at a stable weight
  • have realistic expectations
  • don't smoke
  • commonly have rashes or infections under your stomach

What to expect with a panniculectomy

Before your panniculectomy

  • You'll need lab testing or a medical evaluation.
  • You may need to take certain medications or adjust your current medications.
  • If you smoke, you'll need to stop.
  • Avoid taking aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs and herbal supplements, as they can increase bleeding.
  • Plan for someone to drive you home and stay with you for at least the first night.

During your panniculectomy

  • Surgery is typically outpatient and takes two hours.
  • After surgery, gauze dressings or bandages will be applied to your incisions.
  • An elastic bandage or compression garment may be used to minimize swelling and support your stomach as it heals.
  • You will temporarily have small tubes under your skin to drain excess blood or fluid.

After your panniculectomy

  • Your surgeon will prescribe you medication and will share specific instructions on cleaning and caring for your treated area.
  • Healing will continue and swelling will decrease in a few weeks.
  • Continue to follow your surgeon's instructions and attend follow-up visits as scheduled.
  • Your scar may take several months to a year to fully fade.

Benefits of a panniculectomy

Living without the bother of loose skin isn't only a weight off your stomach — it's also a weight off your shoulders.

  • No more rashes or infections from loose skin. Removing your skin flap gives you a healthier profile without painful rashes or infections.
  • Self-confidence. While a panniculectomy is only a physical procedure, it absolutely can improve your personal comfort and confidence.
