Rhinoplasty

A new nose, a new you

What is rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty, or a nose job, is a surgical procedure that reshapes the nose to improve its appearance and/or function. It can correct a variety of concerns, including the size, shape, and angle of the nose, as well as nasal asymmetry and birth defects. Rhinoplasty can also be used to improve breathing problems caused by structural issues with the nose. The procedure can be performed using open or closed techniques and is typically an outpatient procedure. Recovery time varies depending on the patient.

Who is a good candidate for rhinoplasty?

You may be a good candidate for this procedure if:

  • your facial growth is complete
  • you are physically healthy and do not have any underlying medical conditions that could interfere with healing
  • you are bothered by the appearance of your nose
  • you have realistic goals in mind for the improvement of your appearance
  • you do not smoke

Other factors considered include:

  • The size and shape of your nose
  • The thickness of your skin
  • The overall health of your nasal passages
  • Your age and medical history

It is important to talk to your doctor to understand if this procedure is right for you.

What to expect when getting a rhinoplasty

Before your procedure

  • You may take certain medications or adjust medications you are already taking
  • You will need to stop smoking
  • You will need to avoid taking aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs, and herbal supplements, as they can increase bleeding

During your procedure

  • Your surgeon will make incisions in the nose and carefully reshape the underlying bone and cartilage
  • Surgery typically takes  a few hours
  • The incisions are then closed with sutures, and a splint may be placed on the nose as well as in the nostrils to help it heal in the desired shape

After your procedure

  • Expect some swelling, bruising and discomfort
  • You may have difficulty breathing through your nose for a few days
  • These side effects may take a few weeks to dissipate
  • You can likely return to work or school within two weeks
  • It may take several months for the final results of the surgery to be fully visible
  • Your doctor will schedule a follow-up appointment to monitor your recovery

Benefits of rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty can greatly improve the way you feel about yourself. Some benefits include:

  • Improved breathing. Rhinoplasty can correct breathing problems caused by a deviated septum or other structural issues. This can lead to better sleep, reduced snoring and improved overall health.
  • Enhanced facial aesthetics. Rhinoplasty can reshape the nose to create a more balanced and proportionate appearance. This can boost self-confidence and improve self-esteem.
  • Reduced nasal congestion. Rhinoplasty can reduce nasal congestion caused by allergies, chronic sinusitis or other conditions. This can make it easier to breathe and improve overall quality of life.
