Smoking Cessation

Freedom to live tobacco-free

What is smoking cessation?

We offer several programs to help individuals break their addiction to tobacco and develop a smoke-free lifestyle. These programs include the Freedom from Smoking Program and the Tobacco Free Wellness Series. Both offer education, self-guided programs, counseling and classes to help individuals reach their goal of a tobacco-free lifestyle. Registration is required for all programs.

Who is a candidate for smoking cessation services?

To be eligible for the Freedom from Smoking Program and Tobacco Free Wellness Series, you must be an adult who is serious about quitting smoking. Other services, including one-on-one counseling, may also be available to help you quit smoking. Consult with your healthcare provider to discuss the best course of action for you.

What to expect with smoking cessation

Embarking on a journey to quit smoking can be both challenging and rewarding. Throughout our treatment process, you will find support, guidance and resources to help you succeed.

Before treatment

You’ll need to take some initial steps to get started:

  • Tell your family, friends and coworkers that you plan to quit.
  • Anticipate and plan for the challenges you'll face while quitting.
  • Remove tobacco products from your home, car and workplace.
  • Talk to your doctor about quitting smoking.

During treatment

You should expect to experience the following:

  • Attend group sessions or one-on-one counseling.
  • Learn about the effects of tobacco on your health.
  • Learn about the different methods of quitting smoking.
  • Receive support from your counselor and other group members.

After treatment

  • We will follow up with you to see how you are doing.
  • You will be provided with resources to help you stay smoke-free.

Benefits of quitting smoking

If quitting tobacco products is your goal, we offer several cessation programs to help you achieve it. Here are some benefits you can expect:

  • Lower blood pressure and slower pulse — Within 20 minutes of putting out that last cigarette or spitting out the last chew, both should drop to normal levels.
  • Improved cardiovascular health — Within 24 hours of quitting, your chance of having a heart attack decreases.
  • Increased lung capacity — Within 72 hours of quitting, your lung capacity increases, making it easier to breathe.
  • Reduced risk of cancer — Quitting tobacco products can help reduce your risk of developing several types of cancer, including lung cancer, mouth cancer and throat cancer.
