What you will learn and how to apply to the program

Our standardized curriculum provides an overview of core content in global health and opportunities for educational growth over two years. Requirements are general and applicable to a wide range of specialties and experiences.

You’ll gain a broad understanding of the knowledge and skills needed to translate global health work into meaningful clinical, teaching and learning experiences.

The basic curriculum covers:

poverty
infectious disease
maternal child health
non-communicable disease
essentials of public health
cultural humility
global health ethics

I love global health because of the beautiful people and rich cultures I get to interact with. I learn so much from seeing the world through others' eyes. I feel compelled to participate in global health because of the enormous health disparities that I see around the world and my ability to impact them both through patient care and health system strengthening.

I am PRN faculty at WellSpan York Hospital Family Medicine Residency but work full time in Jordan caring for refugees from Syria, Iraq, Yemen and Sudan at a church-based refugee clinic and teaching Jordanian medical students clinical skills at a local medical school.

How to apply

Complete the application form and email it to Dr. Joseph Uwazota at juwazota@wellspan.org by the appropriate deadline:

three-year residency deadline: Aug. 31 of second year
four-year residency deadline: Aug. 31 of third year
five-year residency deadline: Aug. 31 of fourth year

Requirements

You must:

attend global health seminars (at least 50 percent), which typically occur once monthly at 5:45 p.m.
complete a global health elective, which is a cross-cultural experience that can occur locally or abroad
complete an additional cross-cultural experience or attend a major global health conference
complete a scholarly activity for each cross-cultural experience
present to a journal club on a global health topic

Scholarships

Funds are available only to those residents who have been accepted into the track.
To apply for a scholarship, complete this scholarship application and email it to Dr. Nancy Nagib at nnagib@wellspan.org a minimum of 30 days before your trip.
There are two requirements to receive a scholarship:
Before departing on a trip, you must complete the Johns Hopkins Global Health Ethics Modules, available online.
Upon your return, you must complete a scholarly activity such as a case report submitted for Resident Research Day or a grand rounds presentation.

Travel forms are required for approval prior to your departure. Keep records of your expenses and submit an expense form after your trip. Please allow up to 120 days for reimbursement after you submit the expense form.
