Tuition expenses
Application fee
Our program has a $30 application fee, which must be submitted with your application.
Matriculation deposit
When you’re accepted into our program, a $300 matriculation fee must be paid. This non-refundable fee holds your place in the program.
Tuition
The cost of tuition for our 12-month program is $10,000. Payment is divided into two installments, with half of the amount due by the end of July before your matriculation; the second installment is due by the end of January.
General fee
A fee of $350 is charged to pay for personal safety devices and equipment you’ll use, educational handouts and your membership fee for the American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science (ASCLS). This fee is paid at the start of the program.
Textbooks
You may be required to purchase textbooks for use during the year. Textbook purchases may cost around $150 for the program. Our program uses an online bookstore for course texts. Many additional reference books are available to students through our medical library and our program library.
Related expenses
Room and board
You’re responsible for securing your own housing. The cost of room and board can vary.
Meals
Meals are not provided by the program. You can purchase meals and refreshments in our cafeteria and refreshment areas.
Transportation
You’re responsible for your own transportation to campus and all program functions. Some activities may take place on our other hospital campuses.
Uniforms
You’ll need to wear scrub uniforms in clinical areas. The laboratory provides lab coats for you to wear. We’ll provide additional guidelines for attire to you.
Medical insurance
While participating in our program, you’re not considered a WellSpan employee for health insurance. You must have your own health insurance to cover any necessary medical expenses during the year.
If you’re not a resident of the York area, our Thomas Hart Family Medicine practice is available if you need health care services. You’re responsible for paying any fees related to services provided by the family medicine practice.
College or university fees
If you’re participating in our program during your senior year of college, you’ll may need to pay your college certainfees even though you’re not on the college campus.
Certification examination application fee
At completion of the program, you’ll be eligible to take the certification exam for medical laboratory science. This fee of $250 will be due directly to ASCP in May, near the end of the clinical year.

All fees may change without notice.
Refund policy
Refunds are available for tuition fees if you withdraw from the program. Refunds are for tuition only and based on the chart below. Other fees and charges are not refundable.

Financial aid
Financial assistance may be available to you. Below are several options that provide financial assistance:
Your college or university
Contact your college or university’s financial aid office for information on loans and scholarships.
J. P. Whiteley Clinical Laboratory Science Scholarship
This scholarship assists a student enrolled in our medical laboratory science program. It’s awarded annually by the J P. Whitely Medical Laboratory Science Scholarship Committee.
Professional organizations
Awards, scholarships and loans may be available through professional organizations, such as academic fraternities and sororities and Rotary Clubs, for qualified students.
Part-time employment
We may have evening and weekend employment opportunities available in the laboratory. Job assignments are based on the service needs of the laboratory. Policies covering employment of students are in the student handbook.
Tuition reimbursement
You also have an option of having WellSpan pay your full tuition (up to $10,000). In return, you would commit to accepting a full-time laboratory technologist (medical laboratory scientist) position for two years in one of our laboratories after graduation from the program. At the start of employment, you may also be eligible for an additional $5,000 sign-on bonus.
If you’re already a WellSpan employee when you enter our program, you may be eligible for tuition reimbursement through our benefits program. You’ll need to continue working a set number of hours per pay period while in our program. Contact the human resources department for more details.
