Academic requirements
All radiography graduates must complete the American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT) degree requirements and complete an accredited radiography program to sit for the ARRT’s national radiologic registry exam.
All college/university affiliate college courses and/or program prerequisites must be met before starting the radiography program.
Our academic affiliates include York College, Bloomsburg University, and Gwynedd Mercy University.
You would complete two years of academic preparation through an affiliate college/university followed by our 23-month program. Upon completion of the program, a bachelor’s degree will be awarded by the affiliated college/university.
If you have an associate degree or higher, you are eligible for the program with the following program pre-requisites:
- Mathematical Logical Reasoning: “College Algebra” course or higher (three-credit college course minimum), 2.0 GPA
- Written/Oral Communication: three-credit college course minimum, 2.0 GPA
- Human Anatomy and Physiology I: three lecture hours with laboratory (four-credit college course minimum), 2.0 GPA
- Human Anatomy and Physiology II: three lecture hours with laboratory (four-credit college course minimum), 2.0 GPA
- Medical Terminology: one-credit course minimum or certificate, 2.0 GPA
Transfer credits
The program generally does not grant credit for previous radiography training, and requests for such must be addressed to the program director.
WellSpan Radiography Program will review credits and clock hours from other accredited institutions but does not guarantee acceptance as transferable clock hours for the program.
WellSpan Radiography Program does not offer advanced placement into the program.
Students are required to successfully complete all program courses.
WellSpan Health Radiography Program is non-credit granting.
Application requirements
We accept applications for our program until Jan. 31 for the class starting in August. You must ensure that we receive all required materials on or before the deadline. Information received after the Jan. 31 deadline will not be considered for that year’s enrollment.
We consider your application complete once we’ve received the following information:
- $35 dollar nonrefundable application fee
- application form, which includes the observation form
- official transcripts from all high schools and colleges listed on your application
- three completed reference evaluation forms
- professional career statement
Completed applications are valid for one year.
Application process
No one will be denied admission into our program on the basis of race, gender, gender identity, age, national origin, sexual orientation, religious preference or marital status.
Our radiography program uses an admission committee to select students. The committee uses a point system to evaluate applications. It’s based on cumulative GPA, college course work, your work-related experience, personal and volunteer experiences and your professional statement essay.
If you’re selected, you’ll need to complete an interview. You’ll be notified by email of your final status (admitted, alternate or not accepted) by May 1. All selections are made by our admission committee. New classes begin the third week of August.
Post-acceptance/pre-enrollment
After you’re accepted, all remaining requirements must be complete prior to your enrollment, including:
- Receipt of all official transcripts
- Maintenance of college GPA average at or above 2.5
- Prerequisite course GPA at or above 2.0
- Submission of a nonrefundable $100 acceptance fee
- Valid two-year health care provider CPR certification. You can make arrangements through the program to complete this requirement post-enrollment.
- Receipt of official transcripts of completed prerequisite requirements with appropriate GPA
- Pre-placement health assessment and immunization review
- Criminal background checks prior to starting the program. This an additional cost to the student
- WellSpan is a tobacco-free workplace
Professional liability insurance. Our radiography program at WellSpan York Hospital will provide liability insurance for students. The limits of the policy shall be a minimum of $1,000,000 per claim and an aggregate of $3,000,000 per occurrence. This policy will remain in effect for the duration of the program.
Transportation
You’re responsible for your own transportation to campus, clinical sites, and all program functions. Some activities may take place on our other hospital campuses.
Program withdrawal
You can withdraw your application at any time. If you withdraw, you may reapply to the program at a later date.
Technical requirements
Technical standards
To participate in the clinical education portion of the program, the applicant must possess additional non-academic skills. These technical standards are consistent with the duties of the entry-level radiographer in a professional position. These standards are not limited to, but include:
- Communication – verbal and non-verbal communication between patients, co-workers, visitors and physicians. Must be able to read, write, and speak the English language and communicate in an understandable manner.
- Auditory Skills – hearing a patient’s, co-worker’s or visitor’s request for help, and taking instructions from physicians and supervisors.
- Psychomotor Skills and Coordination – performs physical movements required in lifting and moving patients and handling radiographic equipment.
- Visual Acuity – reading instructions, books, computer screens, technique charts, and patient requisitions with extreme accuracy. Must be able to view images for accuracy.
- Dexterity – manipulating radiographic equipment and computer skills.
- Emotional Maturity – possesses emotional health necessary to fulfill program requirements, such as, integrity, compassion, initiative, and good judgment in stressful situations.
Conditions inhibiting the above listed technical standards may be reviewed by the admission committee. Every effort will be made to make reasonable accommodations when necessary.
Program expenses
Application fee
Our program has a $35 application fee, which must be submitted with your application.
Tuition
The cost of tuition for our program is $21,000.
Textbooks
You will need to purchase textbooks for use during the year. Textbook purchases may be around $1,500 for the program.
Uniforms
You’ll need to wear scrub uniforms in classrooms and clinical areas. We’ll provide you with additional guidelines for attire.
Financial assistance
Our radiography program doesn’t participate in Title IV Federal Student Aid Programs, and federal financial aid is not available. Awards, scholarships and loans may be available through professional organizations, such as academic fraternities and sororities and rotary clubs, for qualified students. You’re responsible for satisfying tuition and other fees associated with the educational program.
Medical insurance
While participating in our program, you’re not considered a WellSpan employee for health insurance. You must have your own health insurance to cover any necessary medical expenses during the year.
If you’re not a resident from the York area, our Thomas Hart Family Medicine practice is available if you need health care services. You’re responsible for paying any fees related to services provided by the family medicine practice.
