Why I chose to pursue a career in healthcare:

Like many clinicians, I was driven by a fascination with science combined with service to humanity, which was nurtured by family and teachers. Being able to help solve problems and contribute to care of patients is immensely satisfying and a privilege. Thus, it was the best natural fit to combine these aspects with a career in medicine. After graduating, I knew the heart was the organ I most wanted to study and recognized that I am both a ‘thinker' and a ‘doer'. Cardiology was the best specialty for me as it combines precise state-of-the-art diagnostics with management with evidence-based medical therapies and quasi-surgical interventions (such as catheterization, pacemakers and ablation), with accurate prognostication.

What I want my patients to know about me:

My approach to caring for my patients is to deliver the best, up to date care available and striving to ensure that no stone is left unturned to determine not only what the diagnoses are, but what the causes of these are. In addition to clinical work and teaching, I also contribute to cutting edge research and want to make these opportunities available to my patients with rapid translation to the bedside. My areas include arrhythmia, imaging, inherited (genetic) cardiac diseases and sudden death syndromes. I have trained in cardiac electrophysiology, imaging and genetic cardiac disease in my country of origin, the UK, as well as in the US (PhD at Mayo Clinic and Cardiac Electrophysiology at the University of Pennsylvania). I endeavor to deliver the knowledge, skills and experience to my patients.

What I do when I'm not seeing patients:

Outside of work I spend as much time as possible with my young family. I have 4 daughters who believe in the magical world of unicorns. As a fan of classical learning, I try to teach them the trivium – the liberal arts of grammar, logic and rhetoric! I am often humbled and reminded that I need to master these too! I also enjoy reading philosophy, popular psychology and current affairs.
