Human research, including clinical trials and clinical research, is vital to the development, improvement and advancement of healthcare worldwide. That includes providing the latest, most innovative treatments to patients right here in Pennsylvania.
The needs of our patients and this community drive the research at WellSpan Health. Our researchers partner with government, industry and academia to participate in and offer a variety of research opportunities.
We currently offer more than 275 active research studies and national clinical trials in areas including:
- oncology
- cardiology
- orthopedics
- emergency medicine
These include research specific to therapeutics, diagnostic testing, investigational drugs and novel devices, as well as data analytics research.

At WellSpan Health, we’re committed to protecting the safety, rights and welfare of all patients who volunteer to participate in research studies or clinical trials.
We follow all federal regulations and adhere to the safeguards established by our Human Research Protection Program.
In fact, our program has been accredited by the international Association for the Accreditation of Human Research Protection Programs since 2013. In addition, our institutional review board (IRB) provides oversight for each study.

Our research team promotes an environment of clinical inquiry that supports innovation, the highest standards of patient care and the practice of evidence-based medicine.
We support principal investigators and their teams by streamlining the regulatory, contractual and financial aspects of conducting research.
Our trained, experienced team helps all WellSpan researchers develop their projects through:
- Research design consultation: Assist in the development of research projects, scholarly activities and the scientific review process, including research education, quality assessments and compliance with federal regulations and good clinical practice standards governing human subjects research.
- Surveys, data collection and statistical analysis: Design and distribute surveys, advise on data collection methodology, perform statistical analysis and provide publication and presentation support.
- Research administration: Review and facilitate documents such as contracts, agreements, master agreements, amendments, data usage agreements and business associate agreements.
- Research business services: Help with budget development and analysis, budget negotiation, research billing and research grant management.
