Presenting: Dr. Thomas Joiner who is perhaps best known for the "Interpersonal Theory of Suicide," which proposes a nexus of risk including an intractable sense of feeling alone and burdensome and the capacity for suicide, the facets of which are fearlessness of death, high pain tolerance, and familiarity with the means of suicide. This session will cover this established theory as well as assessment, treatment, and prevention approaches of suicidal behavior. Dr. Joiner is The Robert O. Lawton Distinguished Professor in the Department of Psychology at Florida State University (FSU). He is the author of over 800 peer-reviewed publications, and the Editor-in-Chief of the journal Suicide & Life-Threatening Behavior. Largely in connection with his book, Why People Die By Suicide, he has made numerous media appearances, including two appearances on the Dr. Phil Show. He runs a part-time clinical and consulting practice specializing in, among other topics, suicidal behavior, including legal consultation on suits involving death by suicide.
