The relationship between experiences of racism and psychological distress has been well-documented in the clinical and empirical literatures. Simply stated, individual who reports experiences of racism are more likely to report accompanying psychological reactions including stress, depression, anxiety and trauma-related symptoms. As such the current workshop will provide a review of conceptual frameworks associated with race, racism and mental health, and will outline the application of the race-based traumatic stress model in counseling and psychotherapy. Presented by internationally known, Robert T. Carter & Associates. At the conclusion of this session, the learner should be able to:
1. Define race and racism.
2. Identify the historical perspective on race and racism.
3. Describe Racism and Psychological functioning-including race traumatic stress.
4. Describe 3 important race-related variables impacting psychotherapy dynamics.
