Respiratory care professionals are trained to provide cardiopulmonary life support for people with acute and chronic respiratory conditions.
Our respiratory care program educates and prepares you for a career as a respiratory therapist. Working with physicians and other health professionals, respiratory care professionals use equipment and treatments to restore normal lung activity in people with a wide range of breathing difficulties.
Respiratory care professionals treat people experiencing an emergency — such as heart failure, stroke, drowning, shock and trauma. They also help people who are living with chronic respiratory conditions, such as asthma, emphysema, bronchitis and cystic fibrosis.
Our program at WellSpan York Hospital partners with York College of Pennsylvania to offer a respiratory care course that results in a bachelor of science degree in respiratory care. Our program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care.
Although most respiratory care professionals work in a hospital, you’ll also have many opportunities for employment and specialization in other areas, including:
- neonatology
- pulmonary function testing
- home care companies
- extended care facilities
- rehabilitation centers
- business management
- education
- medical equipment suppliers
- administration
- hyperbaric medicine
- extracorporeal circulation
- emergency transport
- research
